Football and Analytics

Analytics has been shaped into so many aspects of sports throughout the world. A June 2017 article from Sports Illustrated highlights how each of the 32 NFL Teams utilize analytics for their teams. Some of the most interesting uses of analytics include the Baltimore Ravens, where they have created their own in-house systems that utilizes analytics to evaluate players and find hidden trends they might not see initially. The Browns have the largest analytics team in the NFL and the Patriots do not have much of an analytics staff, but have data be a large part for all coaches and scouts. The article highlights that some teams struggle to switch from their traditional methods and adapting analytics into coaching and recruiting strategies. Some teams have been very open to the changes and incorporating analytics, while others have been much more skeptical. Some of the teams that are seen to use more "old school" methods, or be more skeptical, are the New York Jets, the Carolina Panthers, and the New Orleans Saints. This is extremely exciting to know that so many teams are interested in using analytics as soon-to-be graduates, it is exciting to know we can apply our skills to things we are passionate about, whether it be sports, banking, film, etc. We believe that analytics can change the way recruiting sports is done immensely and it will be very exciting to see how that progresses over the next few years.
